We Have a Two-Year-Old!!!
Jeremy is completely two! He practiced for his birthday party by mastering his blowing technique on things like feathers, bubbles, hot food, and candles on other people's cakes. So when his Mommy presented him with his cake, he got right to business. Jeremy's birthday is two days after his Uncle Ross's, so Barb decorated the cake in celebration of Ross's hockey prowess and Jeremy's first love Elmo. Jeremy proved that candles aren't just for blowing. After he blew his out, he plucked them out of the cake and used them to scoop and eat the frosting with.Jeremy has had a very busy month. The highlight was a trip to Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii with his mommies and his Nanny. It was Jeremy's first airplane trip. Even though it may have seemed like a risky gamble to test his predilection for travelling with such a long flight, any worries were groundless (pardon the pun). Jeremy proved to be an excellent travel buddy! Indeed, it's nice to de-plane after a five hour flight with the confidence that your toddler was better behaved than the drunk woman three rows back.
In Hawaii, Jeremy marched around the rim of the smoldering craters, leaped through the lava tubes, danced through the fern grottos, spashed in the ocean in his birthday suit, chased mongooses and bright green geckos, and made his Nanny laugh and laugh and laugh! He picked apple bananas off the tree, and devoured the Kona creamy butter avocados that are like no others on the planet.
Jeremy needed the vacation. When he isn't languishing in paradise, he is busy attending Kindermusik and Planet Gynastics. He also makes it point to visit as many parks as humanly possible on Mama Nay's days off.
Jeremy wouldn't be authentically two if he couldn't pull off a good tantrum. So he has been practicing that, as well. Truly. When he didn't know Barb was watching, he carefully laid himself down in the hallway face down and legs splayed out behind him; then, once he was positioned just so, he began wailing. If Barb hadn't been watching, she would have thought what Jeremy would have wanted her to think, which is that he was in some major distress. I have also watched him try out various grumpy and sad and whiny faces in the mirror. Seriously! He watches himself with deliberate observation as he screws up his eyebrows and his lower lip, then emits a phony cry. Funny, funny boy!
The most amazing thing is that every day, Jeremy is blooming into such an enjoyable, creative and independent kid. Every parent witnesses the evolution of their child from a helpless collection of tissue shaped as a baby into a mobile and self-motivated little person. But the fact that it has happened several billion times before doesn't make Jeremy's personal journey any less special. I continue to burst with pride everytime I see Jeremy's inner spirit make other people happy. It's an honor to be his mother.
