For over an hour now...
...I have been sitting here, on a Friday evening, watching Mommy Barbie and her son sleeping on the couch. The similarities are amazing. Both, so peaceful. Resting as if they had been casually tossed there by some invisible, caring Force. Their heads each periodically bobbing, searching for that exact place on the cushions where their neck muscles can relax but not so much that gravity will pull their heavy heads down too far. They both fell asleep after eating their favorite comfort food -- a chile relleno for Barb, rice cereal for Jeremy. At random, each smiles in their sleep. What are they dreaming about? Is it a collaborative REM project? Relishing memories of a happy afternoon with Grandma Jean? Jeremy inhales twice for every time Barb does. Jeremy drools. I won't comment on Barb. Except to say, like Mother, like son.
A true "Blue State" story.
Jeremy and I were sitting quietly yesterday afternoon, contemplating the passing of Terri Schiavo and how a moment that should be so private for people who loved her was fanned into a national fervor. At that moment, Tom DeLay appeared on CNN, spewing about "an out-of-control judiciary" that "failed to do what Congress and the President asked." As I am prone to do when I am alone watching the "news," I talked back. I said, "Doesn't the Republican Congressman remember from his sixth grade civics class about the notion of an independent judiciary?" At that moment -- I kid you not -- Jeremy burst out in laughter and chuckles.
I think we have another Democrat in the family. Phew!

First Solid Food

Believe it or not, most of the cereal successfully slid down the hatch! Today, at the tender young age of 4 months and 5 days, Jeremy ate his first solid food. Not only did his pediatrician suggest that it was time, the fact that he has been waking up in the middle of the night famished, despite eating heartily all day prompted his Mommies to take the plunge. Jeremy seems to understand the swallowing gig, even if he doesn't understand that opening his mouth makes it easier to get the food inside. After the meal, Jeremy gave a three-and-half fork rating to the organic whole grain cereal.
Democracy in action.
